Redwood area residents will no longer need to travel several hours away from home to have their knees and hips replaced. Through an expanded partnership with the Orthopaedic & Facture Clinic based in Mankato, total joint replacement surgery will now be offered at Redwood Area Hospital.
“This surgical expansion allows our orthopaedic partners to bring their capabilities to the patient locally and meet a growing need within our community,” said Bryan Lydick, Redwood Area Hospital Chief Executive Officer.
Total joint replacements will be performed by orthopaedic specialists, Dr. Edwin Harrington and Dr. Paul Matson. The two orthopaedic specialists already have a practice established at Redwood Area Hospital and have been seeing patients and performing other orthopaedic surgeries at the local hospital for many years. This expansion allows them to add total joint replacement to their surgical offerings at Redwood Area Hospital.
“The goal of a total joint replacement is to relieve the pain and improve function in the joint caused by damage to the cartilage by fracture or arthritis,” Dr. Matson explained. “The pain may be so severe that a person will avoid using the joint, weakening the muscles around the joint and making it even more difficult to move the joint.”
During a total joint replacement surgery, the orthopaedic specialist removes a damaged joint and replaces it with a metal, plastic or ceramic joint. The prosthetic joint is designed to replicate the movement of a normal, healthy joint. Hip and knee replacements are the most commonly performed joint replacements.
“Being able to provide total joint replacements at Redwood Area Hospital is a great benefit to our patients,” said Dr. Harrington. “This will allow our patients to begin their rehabilitation process with the hospital’s rehab team very soon after surgery and throughout their recovery, providing a consistent continuum of care during a major surgical event.”
“The goal of our surgery team is to provide the best outcomes for our patients with the personal care that may be lost in a larger facility,” said Julie Salmon, RN, Redwood Area Hospital surgical services manager. “We are thrilled to be able to provide this much-needed service to our community.”
