For patients used to traveling to Willmar or the Twin Cities for their infusion therapy or chemotherapy, there is a convenient outpatient option in Redwood Falls. The Infusion Therapy Suite at Redwood Area Hospital provides more patients than ever with close-to-home, individualized infusion treatments.
“Cancer patients requiring chemotherapy have been receiving infusion treatments at out Cancer Care Center for 19 years,” says Cindy Moldan, RN, OCN, CDE, cancer care coordinator. “In the past year, we also began handling the infusion needs of people suffering from non-cancer health conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, asthma, anemia and more. Whether a patient’s infusion needs require blood transfusions, IV medications, chemotherapy or monthly port flushes, we can offer assistance. We also recently added wound care dressing treatments to our care options.”
Providing Safe, Professional Care
Located on the hospital’s second level right next to acute nursing and pharmacy, the Infusion Therapy Suite, which includes the Cancer Care Center, combines patient safety, comfort and convenience in one central location. Moldan notes that being right next to the acute care nursing station ensures patient safety in the event of a rare infusion emergency.
Our acute care cursing staff is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, making evening and weekend non-chemo infusion appointments possible. Chemotherapy infusions are available by appointment during Cancer Care Center hours. In addition to Moldan. two other oncology nurses administer chemotherapy treatments, including Colleen Peyerl, RN, OCN, and Terri Tabor, RN, OCN. “It’s quite unusual for a hospital our size to have three oncology nurses on staff, so patients in our area are very fortunate,” Moldan says.
Offering Comfort and Convenience
Kris Garman, RN, patient care coordinator, is responsible for facilitating physician referrals, insurance requirements and infusion appointments scheduling. “My goal is to reduce the anxiety and hassles that often accompany infusion treatments so that patients can concentrate on getting better,” says Garmen. “And because we’re close to home so many of our patients, being able to have friends or family member accompany them to their treatments – on their schedule – is a wonderful benefit.”
Four separate infusion stations give patients the choice of three comfortable chair recliners or a bed located in a separate room. Each station has its own TV, and a small kitchen provides an area for snacks and beverages for patients and their support givers. The suite looks out over a beautiful community park, swimming pool and rooftop flower garden.
